For 25 years, getting found online meant ranking on Google. You wrote content, optimized keywords, built backlinks, and climbed the search results page. That model is not dying, but it is no longer the only game in town.

AI search engines, tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, are increasingly how professionals and consumers find answers, compare options, and discover services. These tools do not show ten blue links. They synthesize information and give direct answers. If your business is not part of those answers, you are invisible to a growing segment of your market.

How AI search differs from traditional search

Google ranks pages. AI search engines rank information. The distinction matters. A traditional SEO strategy focuses on page-level signals: title tags, backlinks, domain authority. AI search optimization (AEO) focuses on whether the information about your business is clear, structured, and findable by AI systems that crawl and synthesize content.

AI search engines favor content that is factual, structured, and authoritative. They tend to reference sources that provide clear, specific answers rather than pages stuffed with keywords.

What AEO looks like in practice

Start with structured data. Schema markup (JSON-LD) tells AI systems exactly what your business does, where it is located, what services it offers, and who runs it. This is the foundation of AEO.

Second, create content that directly answers the questions your ideal customer is asking AI. Not generic blog posts, but specific, expert answers. If someone asks Claude 'who can help me integrate AI into my business in Stockholm,' you want your name in that answer.

Third, build authority signals that AI systems recognize: clear authorship, consistent information across platforms, and content that demonstrates genuine expertise.

The opportunity window

Most businesses are still exclusively focused on traditional SEO. AEO is largely uncontested territory in 2026. The businesses that invest in it now will have a significant advantage as AI search adoption continues to accelerate.
